Stripped of distortion but none of its darkness, Alice in Chains' Unplugged captures one of the most haunting performances of the 1990s across two LPs.
Recorded in 1996 at the Brooklyn Academy of Music for MTV's acoustic series, the show was the band's first concert in roughly two years. Layne Staley's struggles had kept the group off the road, and nobody knew quite what to expect when they walked onstage. What followed was intimate, fragile and deeply moving, a set of reworked favorites plus a brand-new song performed live for the very first time. The album was produced by Toby Wright with the band.
Without the walls of amplifiers, the songs reveal their bones. "Nutshell" opens the set with aching vulnerability, Staley's voice weary yet powerful, while "Down in a Hole" becomes even more desolate in its acoustic form. "Rooster," Jerry Cantrell's portrait of his father's time in Vietnam, gains an eerie stillness, and "Over Now" becomes a resigned, bittersweet farewell. Throughout, the harmonies between Staley and Cantrell are simply chilling.
Unplugged stands among the finest entries in the MTV series and a vital chapter in the band's story. Spread across four sides, it plays like the intimate, late-night document it is, best heard in one sitting with the lights low.
