A Monastic Trio is Alice Coltrane's first album as a leader, recorded in 1968 and reissued here as part of Verve's By Request series.
She made it at the family home in Dix Hills, New York, in the months after John Coltrane's death, and the music carries both grief and a searching, spiritual calm. Jimmy Garrison holds down the bass throughout, Ben Riley and Rashied Ali share the drum chair, and Pharoah Sanders appears on the opening track, linking the record directly to the late quartet's adventurous final years.
"Ohnedaruth", named for the spiritual name John took, opens with Sanders on bass clarinet and Alice's piano rolling in long, shimmering waves. "Gospel Trane" leans into warm, churchy phrasing, a heartfelt tribute in all but name. On the second side she turns to the harp, and "Lovely Sky Boat" and "Oceanic Beloved" ripple with the glistening, otherworldly sound that would define so much of her later work.
There's a quiet confidence to the whole album, the sound of an artist stepping out of a famous shadow and finding her own language.
For anyone exploring spiritual jazz, this is where Alice Coltrane's remarkable solo story begins, and the reissue puts it back on vinyl where it belongs.
