Alexandre Desplat's score for Guillermo del Toro's Frankenstein arrives on two LPs of red and white splatter vinyl, a gothic romance in music as lavish as the film itself.
The 2025 Netflix adaptation reunited del Toro with the composer behind The Shape of Water and Pinocchio, and the pairing once again draws out Desplat's most emotional writing. With Oscar Isaac as Victor and Jacob Elordi as the Creature, the film treats Mary Shelley's story as a tragedy of creators and the created, and the score follows suit, finding tenderness inside the horror rather than reaching for cheap shocks.
The secret weapon is Norwegian violinist Eldbjørg Hemsing, whose solo lines run through the music like a human voice. The main theme "Frankenstein" sets out the melancholy grandeur, while "Victor's Tale" and "Creature's Tale" mirror each other as two sides of the same wound. The closing "Eternity" lets the orchestra finally exhale, leaving a lingering ache behind long after the final note fades.
Spread across four sides, it plays like a dark fairy tale, best heard with the lights low and the volume generous.
A treat for soundtrack collectors, del Toro devotees and anyone who likes their horror with a broken heart beating at its centre.
