DSU is the home-recorded Alex G album that carried the Philadelphia songwriter from Bandcamp cult favourite to wider acclaim, here as a UK import with a bonus 7-inch.

Released in 2014 on Orchid Tapes, the title is short for Dream State University, a joke name suggested by his sister Rachel, who also designed the artwork. Alex Giannascoli produced and recorded the whole thing himself, and its 13 songs fly by in just over half an hour, scrappy and tender in equal measure.

Harvey and Hollow, both featuring backing vocals from Emily Yacina, show his gift for melodies that sound half-remembered the moment they end. Black Hair sits in the album's slightly crooked middle, and Boy closes things on a gentle, unresolved note.

There is a home-taped intimacy to every song, with warped guitars, pitch-shifted vocals and sudden left turns that reward close listening. Nothing is overworked, and that looseness is a big part of the charm, the sound of someone chasing ideas the moment they arrive.

The included 7-inch adds extra material for collectors, a neat bonus for anyone tracing the path from these bedroom recordings to the bigger canvases of Rocket and House of Sugar, both of which grew from seeds planted here.
