Alex G's DSU is the sound of a bedroom songwriter shrugging off the idea of a big moment while quietly delivering one, the 2014 album that carried his cult following into a much wider world.

Recorded largely by himself and first released through the boutique label Orchid Tapes, it gathered thirteen short, slippery songs that sounded both homespun and strangely out of time. Its reputation grew by word of mouth until a vinyl reissue followed, and it became the record that pointed the way to everything he has made since, right up to his more polished later albums.

"Harvey" is a wistful lo-fi gem of hazy guitar and half-whispered melody, while "Serpent Is Lord" keeps you slightly off balance in the best way. "After Ur Gone" opens the record with jangly melancholy, and "Boy" closes it with a lullaby-like ache that lingers long after the needle lifts.

Underneath the fuzz are songs of real craft, with odd chord turns, layered vocals and lyrics that hint at stories rather than spell them out. The more you listen, the more the small details reveal themselves.

It remains a touchstone for a generation of indie songwriters, and a perfect place to start with one of the most distinctive voices of his era.
