White and green vinyl suits Alcest's Souvenirs d'un autre monde, back as a limited 140-gram reissue of the dreamy album that helped define blackgaze.
Released in 2007, the French project's debut full-length was the moment multi-instrumentalist Neige stepped fully into his own sound, one that floats on the edge of metal while chasing euphoria and nostalgia instead of menace. He dedicated the album to childhood memories of a spiritual otherworld, a theme that would shape every Alcest record to follow, right up to the present day.
"Printemps Émeraude" opens with shimmering guitars that build and break like spring weather, and the title track drifts along on Neige's soft, clean vocals. "Les Iris" is pure reverie, while closer "Tir Nan Og" takes its name from the Irish land of eternal youth and lets the record dissolve slowly into light.
This is the gentlest of Alcest's early albums, with only faint traces of black metal's harshness, and that restraint is exactly why it struck such a chord with fans of shoegaze, post-rock and heavy music alike. Six songs, one long exhale, and not a wasted moment.
What lingers most is the feeling it leaves behind: the hazy pull of somewhere you remember but can never quite return to.
