Albert King's Albert Live returns as a deluxe, remastered 2LP set on limited white vinyl, proof that one bent note from King could do the work of ten.

First issued in 1977, the set arrived as King was carrying his music to the rock audiences who had learned so many of their licks from his records. Eric Clapton and Stevie Ray Vaughan both owed him a debt, and on stage it is easy to hear why: the tone is enormous and every pause lands like a punchline.

The tracklist mixes signature tunes with long, exploratory jams. "Blues at Sunrise" smoulders slowly, his Flying V cutting through the band like a siren, while "Kansas City" and "Stormy Monday" show how easily he could stamp his personality on a standard. The extended jams give the band space to stretch out behind him.

King's singing, warm and conversational, makes a lovely counterweight to all that six-string thunder, and the rhythm section keeps a deep, unhurried pocket from start to finish.

Closing on a stately "I'll Play the Blues for You," it is a reminder of why he sits among the three great Kings of the blues, and this white pressing makes a handsome home for it.
