Late Night Tales finds Air in the role of curators rather than composers, their 2006 after-hours mix reissued on remastered 180-gram 2LP half-speed vinyl, imported from Holland.
The French duo behind Moon Safari were a natural fit for the Late Night Tales series, which invites artists to soundtrack the hours after midnight with records they love. Their selection roams freely across decades and genres, from 1960s pop and film music to post-punk, soul and modern indie, all held together by the same dreamy, cinematic sensibility that runs through their own albums.
The Cure's All Cats Are Grey sets a hazy, nocturnal mood, and Japan's Ghosts adds icy, minimalist tension. Minnie Riperton's Lovin' You floats in on birdsong and that famous high note, and Cat Power's Metal Heart brings a fragile, smoky intimacy. Scott Walker, Lee Hazlewood, Elliott Smith and Robert Wyatt all turn up along the way, alongside a collaboration between Air and the Italian writer Alessandro Baricco.
The result plays like a long, gentle drift through a record collection you wish you owned, every transition considered and every choice made with affection.
For fans of Air and of crate-digging in general, it is the perfect companion for slow evenings, low lights and the last glass of the night.
