Twenty-eight minutes of hardcore fury and the first glimpse of the band AFI would become: Shut Your Mouth and Open Your Eyes arrives here as a limited colored vinyl pressing.

Released in 1997 on Nitro Records, the third album was recorded at Art of Ears in Hayward, California, and produced by the band themselves. It was the first to feature bassist Hunter Burgan, who reportedly talked his session fee up to 666 dollars, and the last with founding guitarist Mark Stopholese. Future guitarist Jade Puget even turns up on backing vocals, making this the first record to include every member of the lineup fans know today.

The songs are short and sharp. "Third Season" got the band its music video, a suburban scene of kids chasing an ice cream truck, and "A Single Second" features Nick 13 of Tiger Army singing on the chorus. "Today's Lesson" is a cover of the punk band Filth, while "Triple Zero" is one of several nods to the number three that run through the tracklist.

The artwork, pieced together from a 1929 children's magic set, hints at the darker theatrics still to come from Davey Havok and company. For fans who only know the later anthems, this is a thrilling look at the roots, loud and full of nerve.
