AFI's Decemberunderground is the 2006 album where the Northern California band's gothic punk went widescreen, all shadowy romance and arena-sized hooks.

By the mid-2000s, AFI had travelled a long way from their hardcore roots, and their seventh album leaned even further into synths, electronic textures and big, dramatic choruses. Davey Havok's voice had never sounded more theatrical, and Jade Puget's guitars and programming gave the record a sleek, nocturnal sheen that set it apart from the pop-punk pack. Their songwriting partnership is at its most adventurous here, borrowing from goth, new wave and electronic music without losing the punk urgency underneath.

Opener "Prelude 12/21" builds a chilly, cinematic atmosphere before "Kill Caustic" bursts in with a jolt of their old hardcore fury. "Miss Murder" became the band's signature hit, a stomping anthem built for shouting along, and "Love Like Winter" pairs icy imagery with one of Havok's most heart-on-sleeve choruses.

Hunter Burgan's bass and Adam Carson's drums give everything a muscular backbone, and the album flows like one long, moody night drive, with the darker corners every bit as rewarding as the singles.

Twenty years on, it still sounds like the soundtrack to countless eyeliner-smudged teenage bedrooms, and it plays beautifully on vinyl.
