Few hard rock records hit as hard as Rocks, the 1976 album that caught Aerosmith at their loudest, loosest and most dangerous.
Riding high after Toys in the Attic, the band reunited with producer Jack Douglas and did something unusual: they cut the basic tracks in their own rehearsal space, the Wherehouse in Waltham, Massachusetts, using a mobile studio, before finishing at the Record Plant in New York. That warehouse air is all over the record. Nothing is polished, everything is turned up, and the five members sound like a gang rather than a product.
"Back in the Saddle" kicks the door in with Steven Tyler's howl and a riff that gallops like a runaway horse. "Last Child" brings a slinky, funk-tinged strut, "Rats in the Cellar" is a breakneck blur of riffs, and "Nobody's Fault" lands as one of the heaviest things the band ever recorded.
Joe Perry and Brad Whitford trade riffs that are grimy and swaggering, while Tom Hamilton and Joey Kramer keep the low end swinging hard. Its influence travelled far: Slash has said it made him pick up a guitar, Kurt Cobain counted it among his favourites, and Metallica have cited it too.
Aerosmith made bigger records later, but never a meaner one.
