Songs and Instrumentals is Adrianne Lenker isolated twice over, alone in a one-room cabin during pandemic lockdown and recovering from a breakup, capturing both her voice and the silence around it on eight-track tape.

With Big Thief's touring plans wiped out and a relationship freshly ended, Lenker retreated to a small pine cabin in the Berkshire foothills with engineer Philip Weinrobe, gathering tape machines and a binaural head to capture not just her acoustic guitar and voice but the actual physical room they were recorded in. Working entirely analog meant no safety net, no comping together a better take later, and that constraint gives both records a rawness that feels less like an aesthetic choice than an honest account of exactly where she was emotionally. Songs is the vocal, lyric-driven half, while Instrumentals strips language away entirely and lets two extended guitar pieces carry the same grief without needing words for it.

Anything is the record's most devastating song, direct and unguarded in a way that made it an instant fan favourite. Zombie Girl carries real tenderness beneath its stranger imagery. My Angel closes the vocal album on something quietly resigned rather than resolved, and Music for Indigo, opening the instrumental disc, lets the guitar work breathe across nearly ten uninterrupted minutes.

Two albums born from the same isolation, one with words and one without. Together they say more than either could alone.
