Sleep in Safety is Los Angeles deathrock at its most gleefully ghoulish, and this reissue of 45 Grave's 1983 full-length comes on green vinyl with black splatter.

Fronted by the formidable Dinah Cancer, the band blended punk's speed with horror-film theatrics and a gothic sense of drama. The lineup here featured guitarist Paul B. Cutler, bassist Rob Graves, drummer Don Bolles, formerly of The Germs, and keyboardist Paul Roessler, with Craig Leon co-producing alongside Cutler at Capitol Studios in Hollywood.

"Insurance From God" opens the album with five menacing minutes, while "Evil" snaps into a sharper, nastier punk attack. "Partytime", later immortalised on the soundtrack to The Return of the Living Dead, is the band at its most infectious, and "Phantoms" lets the keyboards drift into creepier territory.

Cancer's voice cuts through everything, part shriek and part incantation, and the blend of punk grit and spooky camp would echo through the goth and horror-punk bands that followed. Leon's production keeps the guitars raw and the keyboards eerie, so the record sounds as much like a haunted house as a punk club.

For fans of The Damned, The Misfits or early Christian Death, this is a cornerstone of the genre, and the splatter pressing suits its B-movie spirit perfectly.
