Few remix albums feel like a party where everyone actually showed up, but 1000 gecs and The Tree of Clues manages it, turning the breakout from Dylan Brady and Laura Les into a gleeful 2020 free-for-all.
The idea came from the fans. After hearing listeners chop the stems of 1000 gecs into their own versions, the duo opened the doors to friends and heroes from the hyperpop orbit and well beyond it. The result plays like a map of where internet-born pop was heading at the start of the decade, loud and fearless and very funny.
A. G. Cook sets the tone with a glittering rework of "Money Machine," before "Ringtone (Remix)" brings Charli XCX, Rico Nasty and Kero Kero Bonito together for a sugar-rush posse cut. Fall Out Boy, Craig Owens and Nicole Dollanganger pile onto "Hand Crushed by a Mallet," and Injury Reserve drag "745 Sticky" somewhere far grittier. Danny L Harle, Dorian Electra, Black Dresses, Tommy Cash and Hannah Diamond all leave fingerprints too, each bending the originals toward their own extremes.
This single LP gathers the fourteen remixes at the heart of the project, sequenced as a breathless two-sided rush.
For anyone who caught the gecs bug early, it is a riotous and oddly moving document of a scene finding its people.
