Enter belongs to their gothic metal beginnings rather than the symphonic polish that followed, with doom-laden tempos, long instrumental stretches and Robert Westerholt's growls set against Sharon den Adel's crystalline soprano. Lyrically it lives in shadowy territory, drawn to darkness, ghosts and war.

Opener "Restless" unfolds slowly and hypnotically, its haunting vocal line sketching the blueprint for much of what the band would become. The title track stretches past seven minutes of grinding riffs and choir-like keyboards, while "Pearls of Light" and the closing "Candles" balance heaviness with an almost funereal grace. The beauty-and-the-beast vocal contrast feels raw here, less refined than on later records and all the more atmospheric for it.

For anyone who discovered the band through Mother Earth or The Silent Force, this is the origin story, and it holds up remarkably well. Pressed in eye-catching colour, it makes a striking addition to any gothic metal shelf.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Within_Temptation-Enter_Aquamarine_White_Holland_Import.jpg?v=1793980130
