Produced by Rivers Cuomo and Shawn Everett, the record pairs Cuomo with a wide circle of co-writers, including Ryan Adams, Linda Perry, Desmond Child and Dan Wilson, and the variety keeps things lively from start to finish.

Memories opens with a nostalgic rush, its gang vocals supplied by the Jackass crew, and Ruling Me bounces along on a sugar-rush power-pop chorus. Hang On, with Michael Cera adding mandolin and backing vocals, slows down for something sweetly earnest, while Trainwrecks turns slacker self-deprecation into a big, shout-along anthem for misfits everywhere.

There's plenty of crunch in the guitars and a playful streak in the lyrics, but the melodies are what stick. Cuomo writes like someone who has never met a chorus he couldn't make bigger.

For fans of the band's later years, Hurley is a fun, warm-hearted listen at a brisk ten songs, and that cover alone makes it a conversation piece on any shelf.
