Through the 1970s, Motown, Philadelphia International and Stax records were as popular in Kingston as homegrown roots reggae, and Jamaican singers and producers kept reworking the hits in their own image. In Britain, the children of Caribbean migrants grew up loving both, a mix that helped give rise to lovers rock.

The results are irresistible. John Holt brings his silky croon to "You'll Never Find", The Chosen Few give The Stylistics' "People Make the World Go Round" a deep reggae lilt, and Elizabeth Archer and The Equators turn Roberta Flack's "Feel Like Making Love" into a sultry, swaying groove. Carl Bert and the Cimarons tackle War's "Slipping Into Darkness" with smoky menace.

Lee Perry and The Upsetters, Cornel Campbell, Slim Smith and The Now Generation round out a set that moves from sweet harmonies to heavy, funk-soaked rhythms. It is a fascinating and very danceable slice of musical history, with a download card included.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Various_Artists-Rebel_Island_Soul_Under_The_Influence-Reggae_Funk_Soul_in_Jamaica_in_the_1970s_2LP.jpg?v=1793816567
https://vinyl.com/products/various-artists-rebel-island-soul-under-the-influence-reggae-funk-soul-in-jamaica-in-the-1970s-2lp
