thundercat-distracted-red
Thundercat - Distracted [Red]

Thundercat returns after six years with Distracted, a funky, slyly melancholy fifth album pressed here on red vinyl.

Stephen Bruner hadn't released a full album since It Is What It Is in 2020, and Distracted picks up his thread of virtuosic bass, featherlight falsetto and deadpan humor while widening the circle of friends. Greg Kurstin produced much of the record and shares executive producer duties, with Flying Lotus and The Lemon Twigs among those adding their touch.

The guest list reads like a very good group chat. Tame Impala joins on the hazy, five-minute "No More Lies", Lil Yachty turns up on "I Did This to Myself", and a posthumous verse from his late friend Mac Miller gives "She Knows Too Much" an extra emotional charge.

WILLOW brightens "ThunderWave" and A$AP Rocky drops into "Funny Friends", while the nerdier side of his personality surfaces on a track called "Anakin Learns His Fate". Through all of it, the bass playing stays dazzling, fluid and melodic, never showing off for the sake of it.

It's the sound of a singular musician refusing to take himself too seriously, even when the songs cut close to the bone, and the red vinyl suits its warm, playful glow.
