Dulgarian had moved to Philadelphia and started playing under the name with drummer Ben Opatut, and the record catches a group building its own language out of fuzz, melody and odd left turns, with little interest in tidying anything up.

The songs bury sweet, half-sung melodies under thick walls of guitar, then pull the floor out with sudden shifts in texture. "Fake Twenty," "Jadakiss," "Houseplant" and "Blue Raspberry Nine Five" all play that game differently, swinging from blissed-out haze to something far more jagged and spectral within a few bars.

The band has drawn comparisons to My Bloody Valentine and to Philly peers like Alex G and The Spirit of the Beehive, and the roots of that sound are all here, along with Dulgarian's taste for influences far outside guitar music, from drum and bass to breakcore.

The group has since signed to ATO Records, which makes this early chapter well worth revisiting. For shoegaze diggers, it's a raw, rewarding look at where it all started.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/They_Are_Gutting_a_Body_of_Water-Gestures_Been.jpg?v=1793989959
