On this volume, trumpet great Clark Terry joins in too, and hearing nine musicians wrestle with Monk's angular writing is a rare treat.

The heart of the record is Oska-T, a sprawling workout of more than fifteen minutes in which the horns stack up and peel away while Monk prods, comments and needles from the piano. Blue Monk offers a warmer, swinging counterpoint, and a brief run through the Epistrophy theme closes things out in classic fashion, the tune Monk so often used to sign off a set.

Long known to collectors only through unofficial releases, this music now arrives as part of the estate's own archive programme, where it belongs. It's a joyous, slightly rowdy snapshot of a giant at play with friends, and a perfect companion to the first volume.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Thelonious_Monk-Monk_Live_In_Paris_1967_Volume_Two_Red.jpg?v=1793087337
