Released on MGM, the album sold modestly at the time, yet it went on to become a quiet touchstone for generations of indie and alternative songwriters who prized its honesty over noise.

"Candy Says" opens the record with Yule singing Reed's tender portrait of Candy Darling, setting a mood of gentle, almost confessional vulnerability. "Pale Blue Eyes" ranks among the most heartbreaking ballads Reed ever wrote, while "What Goes On" brings back the band's chugging drive with ringing organ and endlessly repeating guitar.

The album closes with "After Hours," sung by Maureen Tucker in a shy, sweet voice that sounds like a lullaby for the last people left in the bar.
