[Yellow]

Ska was born in Kingston's studios, and The Skatalite! captures its founding fathers at full blast, reissued here as a remastered deluxe edition on limited yellow vinyl.

The Skatalites were Jamaica's original ska supergroup, a crew of jazz-schooled players who backed many of the island's biggest singers and cut a wave of instrumentals that defined the sound of the early 1960s. This set gathers some of their finest work for producer Duke Reid, featuring the classic line-up with trombonist Don Drummond, pianist Jackie Mittoo and trumpeter Johnny 'Dizzy' Moore alongside their bandmates.

Drummond's Eastern Standard Time is the jewel, a slinky, moody instrumental where the trombone moans over that chopping offbeat. Yard Broom sweeps in with brassy confidence, Dan-De-Lion swings with a jazzman's ease, and Stranger Cole's vocal turn on Rough & Tough shows how the band could lift a singer. The horns are bright and punchy, the rhythm section relentless, and every track feels made for a crowded dancehall on a hot night.

Decades later, these recordings still sound like the blueprint for everything from rocksteady and reggae to the 2 Tone revival. This deluxe yellow pressing is a sunny way to bring the originators home, and a reminder that the party started here.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/The_Skatalites-The_Skatalite_Yellow.jpg?v=1793087139
