The band recorded it in nine days at Dreamland Recording Studios in Hurley, New York, with multi-instrumentalist Matt Douglas producing and co-writing several songs.

Douglas pushes the band's sound further than ever, with harp, French horn, pedal steel and strings wrapped around Darnielle's urgent voice. Armies of the Lord brings in Lin-Manuel Miranda for a stirring guest turn, Cold at Night features Tommy Stinson on bass, and Rocks in My Pockets carries the album's mix of gallows humour and genuine ache.

There is darkness here, but Darnielle never lets it swallow the songs, and even at the bleakest moments the melodies keep reaching for daylight. The album is dedicated to longtime bassist Peter Hughes, who left the band in 2024, which adds a quiet tenderness to the whole thing.

Spread over four sides, it rewards a proper sit-down listen from overture to final bow.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/The_Mountain_Goats-Through_This_Fire_Across_from_Peter_Balkan_2LP.jpg?v=1793876132
