the-mountain-goats-get-lonely
The Mountain Goats - Get Lonely

Get Lonely is The Mountain Goats at their quietest and most devastating, a 2006 album about the hollow days after a heart breaks, sung almost entirely in a hush.

John Darnielle followed the raw family autobiography of The Sunset Tree with this hushed set for 4AD, recorded at Prairie Sun studios in California with producer Scott Solter. Peter Hughes, Franklin Bruno and cellist Erik Friedlander fill out the sound with piano, strings and horns, but everything is kept close to a whisper, as if raising the volume might break something fragile.

Woke Up New is the heart of the record, a painfully specific portrait of the first morning alone, fumbling through routines that suddenly make no sense. Wild Sage opens with an unsettling calm, Moon Over Goldsboro stretches out into eerie stillness, and In Corolla closes things on a haunting, sea-soaked note that lingers long after the needle lifts.

Darnielle's lyrics are full of small domestic details, empty rooms and long walks, and his gentle delivery makes them hit even harder.

Reviews were mixed on release, but it has since become a cherished, quietly powerful corner of a vast catalogue. Play it on a grey afternoon when you need some company in your sadness.
