He wrote most of it while his wife was away on a two-week residency, much as he once wrote All Hail West Texas during a stretch on his own. It was recorded over two weeks at Sear Sound in Manhattan with producer John Congleton, who also engineered and mixed it, and guests include harpist Mikaela Davis and Janis Siegel of the Manhattan Transfer on group backing vocals.

Darnielle has described the songs as loosely about the 70s, 80s and 90s. "Song for Layne Staley" opens the album with a salute to the Alice in Chains singer, while "Annie Haslam Imperial Phase" adds saxophone and synth to a new wave-inflected tribute to the Renaissance vocalist. "Woodstock '99" revisits a festival that went famously wrong, and the closing "Last Day" turns quietly toward mortality.

Funny, sad and full of affection for music nobody else would think to sing about, it is classic Mountain Goats, and a fine companion to Goths on the shelf.
