Dave Wakeling's anxious, melodic vocals and the veteran saxophone of Saxa gave them a warmth and wit that set them apart from the pack.

Bob Sargeant's production keeps everything taut and danceable. "Mirror in the Bathroom" rides a frantic, hypnotic groove into one of new wave's great paranoid anthems, and their cover of Smokey Robinson's "Tears of a Clown" turns Motown heartbreak into a breathless ska sprint. "Twist & Crawl" shows just how sharp their songwriting was.

Beneath the bounce there is real bite, with the pointed politics of "Stand Down Margaret" sitting alongside love songs and late-night anxieties, all driven by one of the most nimble rhythm sections of the era.

Few debut albums capture a moment in time this vividly, and more than four decades on it still sounds like the best party in town.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/The_English_Beat-I_Just_Cant_Stop_It_Colored.jpg?v=1793991138
