Tom Johnston and Patrick Simmons, the two voices who defined the band's early hits, split the songwriting almost evenly, with longtime guitarist John McFee rounding out the core trio. Producer John Shanks co-wrote every track and gives the record a clean, modern polish without sanding off its roadhouse edges.

The opener Oh Mexico rides a breezy, sun-baked groove that points straight back to the band's classic singles, while Better Days, a Simmons tune, carries a gentle, hopeful lilt. Don't Ya Mess With Me brings out Johnston's tougher side with crunchy guitars and a strutting rhythm, and Easy became a hit on adult contemporary radio thanks to its warm, singalong chorus. Harmonies stack up the way longtime fans will remember, and the guitars still trade licks with real affection.

Liberté is a reminder that some bands age like good denim. For anyone who has worn out a Doobies greatest hits record, this is a welcome new chapter on vinyl.
