Their 2016 second album sharpened that approach, leaning into gallows humour, outlaw tales and songs about bad decisions, all delivered with a straight face and a wicked grin. It helped turn a cult prairie act into a band with fans far beyond Canada.

"Boots" stomps out of the gate with a rhythm you can feel in the floorboards, while "Gunslinger's Glory" lives up to its title with dusty western drama. "Massacre of El Kuroke" leans fully into outlaw storytelling, and "Miss Mary" adds another rough-hewn character sketch to the cast of drifters and troublemakers.

What makes the record work is the push and pull between rough edges and real musicianship. The picking is quick and precise, the harmonies are ragged in all the right places, and nothing feels polished for the sake of it.

For anyone who likes their bluegrass with a smirk and a shot of whiskey, this marbled pressing is a fine way to saddle up.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/The_Dead_South-Illusion_Doubt_White_Black_Marble.jpg?v=1793957147
