The Dave Brubeck Quartet's Time Out returns on limited 180-gram aquamarine vinyl, a Holland import that gives one of jazz's best-loved records a sea-glass shine.

Released in 1959, the album was a real gamble: a whole LP built on time signatures most listeners had never thought to count, from waltzes that refuse to sit in three to grooves that lope along in five. Brubeck's piano, Paul Desmond's alto saxophone, Eugene Wright's bass and Joe Morello's drums turned that experiment into music people hummed on the way to work.

Blue Rondo à la Turk opens with a jittery 9/8 figure before sliding into a relaxed, swinging blues, a switch that still feels like a magic trick. Take Five, Desmond's own composition, rides Morello's patient 5/4 pattern and one of the coolest saxophone lines ever committed to tape. Strange Meadow Lark drifts in softer, with Brubeck stretching out alone at the piano before the band eases in behind him.

What keeps Time Out on turntables decades later is how unfussy it sounds. The math is clever, but the mood is warm, conversational and a little mischievous, four players clearly enjoying the puzzle.

As a first copy or a bright companion to a well-worn original, this aquamarine pressing makes the case all over again.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/The_Dave_Brubeck_Quartet-Time_Out_Aquamarine_Holland_Import_d2a31149-2c0a-464e-be8f-40b94677d31b.jpg?v=1793728732
