Jeremy Enigk's strained, keening vocals and the band's restless, dynamic songwriting helped define what second-wave emo would become, and a generation of bands has been chasing this sound ever since.

Producer Brad Wood captured the quartet with real clarity and warmth. Opener "Seven" lurches between hushed tension and sudden release, while "In Circles" builds its heartbreak around a circling guitar figure. Enigk wrote much of it about a high school romance that kept breaking his heart, and that raw, unresolved feeling sits inside every chorus.

The earliest vinyl pressings of Diary had to drop three songs to fit on a single disc. This edition carries the full eleven-track album across four sides and adds "8" and "9", two early songs that first surfaced on a 1993 seven-inch.

For anyone who came to emo through its later, glossier forms, this is the source, and it remains startlingly honest.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Sunny_Day_Real_Estate-Diary_2009_Remaster_2LP.jpg?v=1793976560
