The touchstones are wonderfully eerie: Stanley Spencer's paintings, the ghost stories of M.R. James and Algernon Blackwood, and the cult children's serial Children of the Stones.

XTC's Andy Partridge wrote the narration, voiced by David Tennant, while Katherine Priddy, multi-instrumentalist Randy McStine and drummer Russell Holzman join the cast. Wilson deliberately chased imperfection, working only with analogue synths, leaving instruments slightly out of tune and picking up violin, oboe and drums himself. From the title track to "Murmuration," "A Basket of Bees" and the closing "The Old God Is Buried," the sequence unfolds like a walk through the village after dark.

It is a record about the human fingerprint, the small flaws that software smooths away, and it brings his concept-album instincts down to a human, handmade scale. Anyone who has followed him from Porcupine Tree through his solo concept pieces will find plenty to pore over, and the double vinyl gives the story the space it deserves.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Steven_Wilson-Requiem_For_A_Village_2LP.jpg?v=1793289736
