Released in 1989 on Jennifer Hartman Records, the only record that tiny label ever issued, it found a wider audience when Touch and Go reissued it in 1993, after Spiderland had built its cult following. The line-up of David Pajo, Brian McMahan, Britt Walford and bassist Ethan Buckler sounds young, restless and gleefully unpredictable throughout.

The nine songs are named after the band members' parents, with one exception: Rhoda takes its name from Walford's dog. Ron opens the record in a blur of lurching rhythms and abrupt stops, Carol tightens the screws with wiry, interlocking guitars, and Kent stretches out to nearly six minutes of coiled, shifting tension. The original vinyl even labelled its sides Bemis and Gerber, a typically odd touch from a band that never did anything the obvious way.

It is the sound of four friends inventing their own strange language, and a vital listen for anyone curious about where math rock and post-rock found their footing.
