Together they made a record steeped in ritual, horror and fairytale menace, a set of songs that would become a blueprint for gothic rock even if the band themselves never wore the label happily.

"Spellbound" opens the album at a gallop, McGeoch's guitar flickering like candlelight while Budgie drives everything forward. "Arabian Knights" is sharp, swaggering and defiant, and "Into the Light" glows with eerie, shimmering atmosphere. "Night Shift" creeps through shadowy streets with real dread, while "Voodoo Dolly" closes the record with a long, hypnotic build that feels like a spell slowly taking hold.

Every song feels cast rather than written, a mix of beauty and threat that few bands have matched. McGeoch in particular plays like a man inventing a new vocabulary for the guitar, all spidery arpeggios and sudden slashes of noise.

Generations of goth, alternative and darkwave acts owe this record a debt, and on 180-gram vinyl its rich, haunted sound comes through in full.
