It laid the groundwork for The Execution of All Things and More Adventurous, but it has a scrappy, wide-eyed charm all its own.

Go Ahead starts with a breezy, sunlit melody that hides a sting in its tail, while Science Vs. Romance wraps swirling guitars around one of the band's most enduring early songs. Pictures of Success is a bittersweet daydream about ambition and doubt, and Plane Crash in C builds slowly into a dreamy, melancholic swell.

Lewis's voice is the heart of it all, warm and conversational, while Sennett's guitar work adds a gentle shimmer. Short variations on earlier themes thread the record together like scenes in a film.

Plenty of listeners found the band through its later records, but this is where the story begins. Spread over four sides, it invites a slow, attentive listen.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Rilo_Kiley-Take_Offs_and_Landings_2LP.jpg?v=1793876001
