pixies-head-carrier
Pixies - Head Carrier

Fresh blood drives Head Carrier, the 2016 Pixies album that introduced Paz Lenchantin as the band's bassist on record.

Recorded at RAK Studios in London with producer Tom Dalgety, it found Black Francis, Joey Santiago and David Lovering sounding re-energised after the comeback of Indie Cindy. Lenchantin had already toured with them, and her playing and backing vocals give the songs a fresh lift. The title refers to a saint carrying his own severed head, a typically strange image from a band that never lost its taste for the macabre.

The title track "Head Carrier" opens with a lean, propulsive punch, and "Classic Masher" is one of the band's poppiest moments in years. "Um Chagga Lagga" brings back the frantic energy of their early records, while "All I Think About Now" puts Lenchantin's voice front and centre on a wistful, reflective song. Santiago's guitar remains as angular and unpredictable as ever, and Lovering's drumming keeps everything tight and punchy from start to finish.

Often overlooked next to their classic albums, Head Carrier rewards anyone curious about where Pixies went next in their long second act. It sits comfortably alongside the rest of their catalogue on the shelf, and it holds up well to repeat listens.
