What emerged was more focused and cohesive, a band learning how to stretch an idea across a whole side without losing the thread.

That side is Echoes, a 23-minute piece that grew from a single piano note Richard Wright fed through a Leslie speaker. Side one opens with One of These Days, driven by a pulsing, echo-drenched bassline and Nick Mason's lone, menacing spoken line. Fearless fades out on Liverpool FC supporters singing You'll Never Walk Alone at Anfield, while Seamus features a howling dog with surprisingly decent timing.

Hipgnosis designed the sleeve, an ear underwater catching ripples of sound, a fitting image for a record so concerned with space and echo.

For Floyd collectors, a Japanese pressing of this pivotal album makes a handsome addition to the shelf.
