It was the first album with keyboardist Joakim Svalberg. Åkerfeldt produced it with Tom Dalgety at Rockfield Studios in Wales, Steven Wilson handled the mix and Dave Stewart arranged the strings.

Eternal Rains Will Come opens with a burst of busy, fusion-flavoured playing before blooming into lush harmonies, and Cusp of Eternity, the lead single, drives forward on a muscular riff. The ten-minute Moon Above, Sun Below is the album's sprawling centrepiece, while Faith in Others closes the record with sweeping strings and real emotional heft.

Mellotron, Hammond organ and intricate twin guitars give the whole album a warm, analogue glow that rewards close listening. Martín Méndez and Martin Axenrot keep the rhythm section supple, while Fredrik Åkesson's lead guitar trades lines with Åkerfeldt throughout.

For listeners who followed Opeth from their death metal roots into this more melodic era, Pale Communion is the album where the new direction truly came into focus, and this heavyweight pressing does its textures justice.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Opeth-Pale_Communion_2LP_Holland_Import.jpg?v=1792935097
