The album restored his standing at the top of New York rap and reminded everyone that few writers could match his eye for detail or his command of a story, whether he was trading blows with rivals or looking hard at his own city.

Ether is the headline, of course, a scorched-earth reply in his feud with Jay-Z that remains one of the most famous diss records ever made. One Mic builds from a whisper to a roar as Nas wrestles with faith, violence and ambition, while 2nd Childhood paints a sharp, sympathetic portrait of people who never quite grew up. Got Ur Self A... flips the theme from The Sopranos into a swaggering street anthem that still sounds huge.

A quarter century on, it still plays like a master reclaiming his crown, poised between reflection and confrontation. On double vinyl, the dense, cinematic production gets room to breathe, and the record takes its rightful place as a cornerstone of any serious hip-hop shelf.
