morphine-cocoon
Morphine - Cocoon

Cocoon is a lost Morphine album brought back to life, built from sessions Mark Sandman recorded in his final years and completed more than two decades after his death in 1999.

Before making The Night, the band began and then shelved a run of recordings with producers Paul Q. Kolderie and Sean Slade. Years later, Kolderie and Sandman's partner Sabine Hrechdakian transferred the tapes and chose the songs, Kolderie mixed the album, and Dana Colley added fresh saxophone parts to three tracks. The result fills a gap fans never expected to see closed.

The sound is unmistakable. Sandman's low, smoky voice and two-string slide bass slink around Colley's saxophone, the drums swing rather than pound, and there is no guitar in sight because none is needed. Morphine called it low rock, and nobody has done it better.

The title track leads the way, an earlier version of which surfaced on a 2004 Sandman compilation. Tomorrow opens the record, Pretty Face closes it, and Wig sits among the eight songs in between, each one steeped in late-night cool.

For anyone who wore out Cure For Pain or Yes, this is a bittersweet gift: one more late-night conversation with a band that never sounded like anybody else.
