method-man-tical
Method Man - Tical

The first solo album out of the Wu-Tang camp after 36 Chambers, Method Man's Tical is murky, menacing and impossible to shake.

Released in 1994 on Def Jam, it put the clan's most magnetic voice front and centre, reaching number four on the Billboard 200 and number one on the R&B and hip-hop albums chart. RZA produced most of it, with 4th Disciple co-producing "Sub Crazy," and many of the beats had to be rebuilt after a flood at RZA's studio wiped out a stash of early work. That damp, battered atmosphere seems to have soaked straight into the grooves.

"Bring the Pain" is the calling card, a slow, swaying horror-show of a single with Meth's hoarse, playful flow riding on top. The title track sets the tone early with grimy loops and cartoon-villain menace, while "Release Yo' Delf" flips a disco anthem into a hard-nosed rallying cry. Raekwon drops in for "Meth vs. Chef," a back-and-forth that feels like two old friends sparring for bragging rights.

Decades on, Tical still sounds like a basement tape smuggled out of Staten Island, raw and gloriously unpolished. Drop the needle and let RZA's gloomy production fill the room. That heavy, smoky low end sounds right at home on vinyl.
