This Blue Note Tone Poet Series reissue arrives on 180-gram vinyl.

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1970, the album sat on the shelf until Blue Note finally released it in 1974. By then Tyner had moved into a bolder, more spiritual phase, and Asante catches the start of it. His pianism is all thunder and rolling modal clusters, but the band around him gives the record its distinctive colour.

Andrew White's alto saxophone cuts bright lines through the music, while Ted Dunbar's guitar, a rare sound on a Tyner date, adds a lighter, chiming texture. Buster Williams and Billy Hart lock in a deep, elastic pulse, Mtume's percussion keeps everything moving, and Songai Sandra Smith's voice floats over "Malika" and the title track. "Malika" and "Fulfillment" both stretch to around fourteen minutes, giving the band room to build and burn, while the title track and "Goin' Home" are tighter. Tyner even picks up a wooden flute along the way.

It is one of the overlooked gems of his catalogue, and it rewards a proper listen. Long-time Tyner fans and curious newcomers will find plenty to love.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/McCoy_Tyner-Asante_Blue_Note_Tone_Poet_Series.jpg?v=1793813976
