mazzy-star-among-my-swan
Mazzy Star - Among My Swan

Mazzy Star's Among My Swan drifts even further into the dusk than its predecessors, a 1996 record of slow folk, smoky blues and quiet ache.

By the mid-1990s, Hope Sandoval and David Roback had become the patron saints of late-night melancholy, their previous album having turned Sandoval's voice into a fixture of alternative radio. Rather than chase that success, they made their third record even more inward-looking. Roback produced, and the result feels like a private conversation overheard through a half-open door.

"Disappear" sets the tone straight away, Sandoval's voice hovering above a gently rolling groove as if she might vanish mid-line. "Flowers in December" carries a lilting, folk-tinged sway and one of her most tender melodies, while the closing "Look On Down from the Bridge" is a hushed, organ-led farewell that feels like lights going out one window at a time. In between, Roback's guitar shimmers, smears and occasionally bites.

Nothing here hurries, and nothing ever needs to.

This is music for rainy afternoons and very late nights, best heard on a turntable with the volume low and the lamp dim. Fans of slowcore, dream pop and anything Sandoval touches will find a great deal to love in its unhurried, candlelit glow.
