marcus-king-mood-swings
Marcus King - Mood Swings

Marcus King's Mood Swings is the South Carolina guitarist's most personal record yet, a 2024 album produced by Rick Rubin that faces his darkest moments head on.

After two albums with Dan Auerbach, El Dorado and Young Blood, King took a different route for his third solo record. Working with Rubin at Shangri-La in Malibu, alongside sessions at Easy Eye Sound in Nashville, he traded some of the fuzz and swagger for something warmer and more vulnerable, leaning on vintage soul as much as Southern rock. The album went to number one on the Billboard Top Blues Albums chart, a sign that fans were ready to follow him somewhere new.

The title track sets a warm, soulful tone, King's raspy voice front and center over a gently swaying groove. Save Me carries the pleading urgency its title suggests, and Bipolar Love, the longest song here at over six minutes, gives his guitar room to roam, every bent note sounding like a confession. Me or Tennessee lays out a hard choice with homespun honesty, the kind of song that only works when the singer means every word.

It's a brave record from a player who could easily have coasted on his chops. On vinyl, King's voice and gorgeous tone feel even closer and more intimate.
