Madlib, the Oxnard, California producer born Otis Jackson Jr., built these short, cinematic sketches from soul, funk, jazz and soundtrack samples, arranging them like scenes from an imaginary movie with no dialogue.

The Comeback (Madlib) sets the tone with dusty drums and a swaggering loop, and Electric Company (Voltage-Watts) crackles with warped, buzzing energy. Black Mozart (Opus II) reaches for something grander, while African Walk (Zamunda) moves with a loping, hypnotic stride that sticks in the head for days.

Most pieces last barely a minute or two, so ideas arrive and vanish before you can catch your breath, and the joy is in the sequencing, the way one groove bleeds into the next like a mixtape assembled by a restless genius. Headphones help, because the details hidden in the mix reward close attention.

It remains a cornerstone of instrumental hip-hop and a favorite of beatmakers everywhere, and this two-color pressing suits its patchwork spirit perfectly.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Madlib-Beat_Konducta_Vol._1-2_Movie_Scenes_2LP_Blue_Red.jpg?v=1793641779
