The album followed in 2021. The songs come from the great studios and songwriters of Memphis and Muscle Shoals, with a few detours, and Williams treats them with the respect of a lifelong fan.

Her weathered voice is a natural fit for this material. "Ode to Billie Joe" becomes a slow, humid piece of Southern gothic storytelling, and "Rainy Night in Georgia" gets a beautifully worn-in reading full of late-night ache. She digs into Al Green's "Take Me to the River" with a gritty groove, and Percy Sledge's "It Tears Me Up" finds her at her most vulnerable.

There's nothing slick about these performances, which is precisely the point. It's a loving homage from an artist who has always understood that soul music and country storytelling spring from the same place.
