Peter Criss even recorded drums in a bathroom to get the right crack. Many of the songs grew out of older demos, reworked into tighter, meaner shapes that suited the band's no-frills mood. It was also the first Kiss album without a writing credit from Ace Frehley, though his guitar still crackles all over it.

"Calling Dr. Love" is pure Gene Simmons swagger, all prowling riff and leering humor, while "I Want You" and "Makin' Love" show Paul Stanley at full strut. The surprise is "Hard Luck Woman," a breezy, acoustic-tinged ballad Stanley once planned to pitch to Rod Stewart, handed to Criss as a follow-up to his earlier hit ballad and delivered with ragged, raspy charm.

Short, loud and built for the car stereo, it captures Kiss in the middle of their seventies hot streak, when every album seemed to arrive with another anthem for the rafters.
