Instead of another set of garage stompers, Stu Mackenzie and company built what they called a cult western audiobook.

The storyteller is Broderick Smith, former frontman of 1970s Australian rockers The Dingoes and father of keyboardist Ambrose Kenny-Smith. He wrote the tale himself and delivers it in a weathered voice, a saga of child soldiers, frontier conflict and gunfights that the band scores like a lost midnight matinee.

The title track sets the scene with twanging, reverb-heavy guitar, while The Raid and Evil Man ride harder on galloping rhythms and snarling lead lines, feeding Mackenzie's stated love of bad guys and evil guitars. Fort Whipple pushes the story deeper into dusty, desperate territory, and the whole tale wraps up in under half an hour.

It remains one of the stranger and more charming detours in a famously restless discography, and a clear disc suits a record so preoccupied with wide-open horizons. Dim the lights and let Smith do the talking.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/King_Gizzard_and_the_Lizard_Wizard-Eyes_Like_The_Sky_Clear.jpg?v=1792935284
