jorge-ben-a-tabua-de-esmeralda-uk-import
Jorge Ben - A Tábua de Esmeralda [UK Import]

Alchemy, mysticism and a guitar that never stops dancing: Jorge Ben's A Tábua de Esmeralda returns as a UK import of one of the great Brazilian albums.

Released in 1974 on Philips and produced by Paulinho Tapajós, his eleventh studio album takes its title from the Emerald Tablet, the cryptic Hermetic text said to hold the secret of transmutation, and its cover borrows drawings attributed to the alchemist Nicolas Flamel. It was also the last record on which Ben leaned so heavily on acoustic guitar, and it is regularly ranked among the finest albums Brazil has ever produced.

The opener, "Os Alquimistas Estão Chegando Os Alquimistas", sets the scene with a rolling, hypnotic groove and a chorus that refuses to leave your head. "Zumbi" turns to Afro-Brazilian history with real force, honouring the leader of the Palmares quilombo, while "Brother" is a breezy, warm-hearted highlight. "Errare Humanum Est" floats somewhere between samba, soul and cosmic wonder. Even a song about a man's flowery tie turns out to be a coded nod to Paracelsus.

Spiritual yet endlessly groovy, it is the sound of a songwriter at the peak of his powers. For anyone who loves África Brasil or the samba-soul scene of the 70s, this belongs on the shelf.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/Jorge_Ben-A_Tabua_de_Esmeralda_UK_Import.jpg?v=1793641483
