This collection, released in 2024, draws from that first record through the end of the decade, a run of albums that made him a songwriter's songwriter long before the wider world caught up.

Angel from Montgomery is here, his devastating portrait of a woman trapped in a loveless marriage, alongside Paradise, the gentle protest about strip mining in Muhlenberg County, Kentucky, where his family came from. Please Don't Bury Me turns mortality into a gloriously silly sing-along, and later picks like That's the Way That the World Goes 'Round show how his warmth only deepened with time. The arrangements stay simple, built around acoustic guitar and that worn, wry voice, so the stories always come first.

Prine's songs never needed dressing up, and they still land with the same plainspoken grace. It is an easy place to start, and a lovely set to come back to.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/John_Prine-Now_Playing_bca23606-2951-4b63-9259-b34f5dcf0099.jpg?v=1793188123
