These Savoy dates, co-led with Harden, have long sat in the shadow of his Prestige and Blue Note output, which makes having Mainstream 1958, Jazz Way Out and Tanganyika Strut side by side all the more welcome. Together they form a complete and often overlooked chapter.

The company is first rate, with Tommy Flanagan, Curtis Fuller, Doug Watkins, Louis Hayes and Art Taylor among the players. Wells Fargo swings with relaxed hard bop confidence, Harden's warm, rounded tone acting as the perfect foil for Coltrane's restless, searching runs up and down the horn.

Dial Africa and Gold Coast lean toward something new, unhurried and modal-tinged, with an African-inspired lilt that hints at the spiritual exploration that would define Coltrane's later work. The standard Once In A While brings the set home on a more familiar note.

A rewarding set for anyone tracing Coltrane's path from hard bop star to visionary, and a fine reminder that even his lesser-known corners burn bright.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0704/2026/7313/files/John_Coltrane-The_Savoy_Recordings_3LP_65463d5c-bf5e-4bc6-9bd2-4551309ac6c8.jpg?v=1793291636
